How to Produce the Fruit of the Spirit

Hartley Engel
How do you produce the fruit of the Spirit?

The first step is to know what this delicious fruit is. The Apostle Paul says, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22, 23).

The only way to manifest the fruit of the Spirit is to abide in Jesus Christ. "Abide in me and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in Me." (John 15:4). How Do You Abide in Christ? By drawing close to Him through prayer, keeping His commandments (John 14:21), attending a good, lively church, and by diligently and prayerfully reading the Bible (see quote below).

When you bear the fruit of the Spirit you feel altogether delightful; you reflect grace and truth, you reflect the light of Christ. You receive abundant blessings (Luke 11:8) and, best of all, you become a powerful witness to a hopeless and dying world.

The Bible contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you.

It is the traveler's map, the pilgrim's staff, the pilot's compass, the soldier's sword, and the Christian's charter. Here paradise is restored, Heaven opened, and the gates of hell disclosed.

CHRIST is its grand subject, our good the design, and the glory of God its end.

It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently, and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. It is given you in life, will be opened at the judgment, and be remembered forever. It involves the highest responsibilty, will reward the greatest labor, and will condemn all who trifle with its contents.

I believe I am producing "fresh" fruits :) Not the canned variety either. Yesterday, I gave a ride to a college student and ended up talking to him about eternity. I told him, "Instead of worrying about your career - work on where you'll spend eternity" - It gave him much to ponder ;) cheers (hopefully next time he won't call for a cab instead! lol)
