What is a professional bra fitting?
Ideally, your professional bra fitting should take place in a specialty lingerie store. These stores employ women who are specifically trained to find you the right bra - in band size, cup size, support, and style. If you do not have a specialty lingerie store in your town, you can try department stores and ask for a fitting.
A professional bra fitting will give you the most accurate measurement of you correct bra size. Yes, you can take measurements at home, but a trained professional will give you unbiased advice.
You can also find special mastectomy bras, nursing bras, and special occasion bras at fine lingerie stores. As your life situation changes, you may need to be re-fitted into a new bra size and style.
What happens during a professional bra fitting?
The bra fitter will take your band measurement while you're wearing a bra. In many cases, you'll be asked to remove your shirt. Next, she'll determine your cup size by measuring the fullest portion of your bust.
Once the professional bra fitter has taken your measurements, she'll bring you a few different styles of bras to try. Your input is important during this step because you'll need to indicate some preferences. For example, do you want underwire or not? Molded cups or not? Cotton or synthetic?
The bra fitter will then help you try on the bra and will adjust the fit as necessary. You may need some shoulder strap adjustments.
You should try on at least 3 or 4 bras to determine which one fits you the best. Try twisting around and moving your body to see how you like the fit. If a certain bra does not feel right to you, tell the professional bra fitter what you don't like about a particular bra.
How does a professional bra fitting change your life?
As unlikely as it may sound, a well-fitted bra will change your life for the better. You'll feel better when you notice that your bra straps stay put on your shoulders and your bra band doesn't dig into your sides.
Your self-confidence will improve since your clothes will fit better with the right bra. In fact, you may even look like you have lost weight because the right size bra will reduce binding and bunching and eliminate odd rolls on the sides and in the back. You'll finally be comfortable!
A well-fitted bra will also improve your posture because your breasts will be supported properly. You may even notice a decrease in neck and shoulder strain.
If you've never had a professional bra fitting, schedule one! You'll be surprised at how comfortable a bra can be when it is the correct size and style for your body.

This article is well done! A friend emailed me a few months ago raving about her professional bra fitting. I thought it strange at the time, but seeing your article and comments here has finally made sense of her excitement! Women should re-evaluate their bra size more often. Losing just a few pounds can really detriment the fitting of a bra, but make your waist line look so much better!
Oprah did a show about this and the before and after shots were amazing. With the proper bras, some women not only looked thinner and shapelier but younger too! Excellent article.
The best thing I ever did was get professionally fitted! Great article!
I meant to say, "Hey Joe" in my response. (Then someone named Mike walked into my office as I was typing. Oh well.)
Hey Mike, good question. Believe it or not, there are professional training programs for bra fitters. This is especially important for breast cancer survivors because they need to be fitted by a Certified Mastectomy Fitter (CMF). I believe training to become a CMF is through hospitals. For general bra fitting, many specialty stores offer in-house training for their bra fitters. Must be quite the training class!
Where does one go to receive the requisite training to be a fitter?
I've heard a lot of women say this ... maybe if I had bigger bazookas I would pursue this option ... but I can get by with bandaids. LOL
