How to Program a Directv Remote to Any Television

What You Can't Find in Your Owner's Manual

Kat Sanchez
The new Directv DVRs, or digital video recorders, are easier to program than the old Tivo models: in the past, you would have to call customer service or scour the web to find the correct code to input in order to allow their Directv remote to control functions on their television, such as volume and channel. With the new models (Directv is no longer affiliated with Tivo), a user can access a list of these codes through the menu. These codes are sorted alphabetically by brand, and each brand has anywhere from one to half a dozen codes the user must try before they find the right one. If your television is brand new, or rather old, these codes might not work. And if your brand isn't listed, you may not be able to program it at all. There is a code search feature, which goes through each of the codes one by one looking for the particular one for your tv; however, the process may take up to half an hour.

Luckily, there is a simpler way to program your Directv remote to almost any television. These steps may not work with a tv that has a built-in VCR or DVD player. Also, I have only tested this with a standard DVR, not a high-definition DVR. It may work with one, or may require a different set of procedures. Also, these steps do not work with the old Tivo model. If your television model is not on the list of codes, or you just want to take a shortcut, try these steps before calling customer service:

10 Steps to Program Your Directv Remote

1. Turn on television.

2. Locate the switch at the top of your remote that allows you to toggle between receiver, auxilary, and TV modes. Slide switch over to"TV".

3. Hold down MUTE and SELECT until a small green light at the top of the switch blinks twice.

4. Enter code 9911.

5. Press and release the CHANNEL UP button repeatedly until television turns off.

6. When TV turns off, press SELECT.

7. Next, press the power button. This should turn the TV back on.

8. With television on, press and hold down MUTE and SELECT again until the small light blinks twice (same as in step 3).

9. Entercode 960.

10. Slide switch back over to "DTV". Your remote is now ready to use!

"There is a code search feature, which goes through each of the codes one by one looking for the particular one for your tv; however, the process may take up to half an hour." Your method is this half hour process listed on the DTV menu... channeling up merely goes through ea. code

From the author -- unfortunately this does not work with all televisions, and sometimes it only controls certain aspects of the tv, such as the power, but not the volume. If this cheat doesn't work, you will have to go through all the codes. Also, I do not have any updated info for 2010 on programming. I apologize for those who could not be helped by this article.

Kat -- Thank you so much for this article. Extremely helpful. We just got our units and we were really having a hard time just trying to follow the instructions on the menu especially since they had different codes than what you had. We really appreciate you putting this help out there.
