How to Promote Your Book on a Shoestring Budget - Book Review

A Great Holiday Goft for that New Author or Aspiring Writer!

Kathryn E. Darden
If you know any aspiring authors, new authors or authors who are going the self-publishing route, How to Promote Your Book on a Shoestring Budget should definitely be on your holiday gift list this Christmas! Published in September of 2008 by NovelMaker, How to Promote Your Book is a very helpful collection of tips, suggestions, and examples of how to do everything from planning a book signing, writing a press release, putting together a media kit, developing a marketing strategy, and working with newspapers and magazines to get publicity for your book and your events.

How to Promote Your Book on a Shoestring Budget would make a great holiday gift for any new or self-published author as well as any author who is considering self publishing a book. Many times an author will get published by a print-on-demand publisher or other small press only to discover that there is little or no promotional or marketing support once the book is printed. This means the new author has to quickly learn the tricks to planning events, contacting the media, and publicizing their books. For a first-time writer or a seasoned professional, How to Promote Your Book provides ideas and tips that will make the job of promoting and selling books much easier.

How to Promote Your Book on a Shoestring Budget gives authors step-by-step instructions on how to promote their books by taking advantage of free and low cost publicity and events. The simple examples are easy enough for a beginner to follow, but the overall content would even be helpful to seasoned authors. At the end of every chapter there are some workbook pages designed to help readers implement the material in each chapter to help avoid the problem of procrastination. Readers are encouraged to begin to work with the material immediately while the ideas and information are fresh to put together and organize their own media list and contacts lists, write their press releases, develop their media kits, and begin work on other promotional projects.

The book's 20 chapters cover such helpful topics as:

- Creating a Marketing and Promotion Plan

- Getting Free Publicity for Your Book

- Planning Your Book Signing

- Considering Other Public Appearances

- Putting Together an Effective Media Kit

- Writing Your Press Releases

- Building a Web Site

- Utilizing Social Networks

- Unwrapping Holiday Tie-Ins

- Hiring a Publicist

- Managing Expenses and Expectations

- Checking the Checklist, and eight other chapters.

The book has a perfect (trade paperback) binding, contains 110 Pages, 6" x 9" and sells for $14.95. The ISBN number is 1-888061-02-2.

There is also a Promote Your Books website sponsored by the book where writers can connect with the author and ask questions about book promoting and where the author can share new tips and "extras" after the book's publication.

How to Promote Your Book on a Shoestring Budget is also available on Amazon.com where it has received good reviews.

I couldn't agree more, Kathryn. I don't care how "cool" or interesting an idea is that pops into my head, if the passion for the story isn't there, I'll never care about it enough to finish it.

Pick the one you have the most passion for and finish it! A lot of writers self publish these days.

I will have to keep this in mind. I've started a few novels but I think a fear of never actually getting them published prevents me from finishing them. Great article :)
