How to Promote Your Poetry

Denise
So now you are on your way to becoming a published poet, or better yet, you are one! The next thing you have to do is start getting the word out and promoting your craft. Here are some ways to do that.

Don't Be Shy
If there are any poetry slams in your area, poetry readings, places to do book signings-get out there are do it. You can call the bookstores and coffee shops in your area, send them press releases and tell them you are available. Independent stores are more likely to be welcoming than the retail chains. They are the ones to work with to get your book in the stores. Think about your book and what groups are most likely to want to come and have you read and sign their books.

Postcards
These have to be special. Purchase some software and create some on the computer. Print them out on your own. You can go to your area copy center and buy the right paper to create them. You can use them for all sorts of promotion, a poem on one side, the release of your book, how to order your book. You can mail them, and hand them out wherever you go.

Extra! Extra!
See if there's an area in your newspaper where you can promote yourself. You never know, maybe someone will want to feature you as a poet. You can list the readings or book signings you are giving in the paper, so a larger crowd will see it. You can also try radio and television. Ask around and see what happens. Don't just go local-go regional.

Website
This one's obvious, and probably is the first thing you are going to do to promote yourself as a poet. Having a website to list on a business card or postcard really makes it easy for people to know more about you. You can create your own website learning HTML or find a free website. There are quality free websites around, but they are just very hard to find. You can use a blog, like blogger, and place Adsense ads on them, and other forms of revenue to really make your website pay for itself, when you are experiencing some downtime.

I like the idea of postcards. I'll have to tinker around and see what I can come up with.

    Good poetic promotion pointers.
