How I Promoted My Business: Some Cheap Ways to Promote Your Business in a Recession

L J Pearce
Marketing, promoting and advertising a business can be costly; especially when you haven't got a budget in place. However, don't let this put your off as promoting your business doesn't have to cost you a small fortune. In fact, there are quite a lot of low cost ways you can get the word out about your business, even on a shoestring budget.

Here are just a few of the ways I have promoted my business:

- Use social networking. Social network websites such as Twitter and Facebook are ideal to promote your business as they are cheap and easy to use. Using social networking to keep customers up to date on your business, and to promote your business on the whole is a very cost efficient and effective medium to use, no matter how big or small your business.

- Be your own promotional tool. Try to spread the word of your business 5 times a day, be it through email, through word of mouth or via email. Tell 5 new people about your business through any type of marketing medium you feel appropriate.

- Get your own website up and out there. Not having a website for your business is a mistake. So, if you haven't got one what are you waiting for. If you have a business website, then why not try to tweak it and get more people viewing it. Basic SEO (Search engine optimization) can be done by anyone, so take matters into your own hands.

- Use flyers. Produce your own A5 flyers and leaflets and hand them out to your target market.

- Get blogging. Blogs are still popular. Creating and maintaining a blog that lets customers know what you have and what you offer is a cheap, if not free way to promote your business.

- Use word of mouth. Tell all of your contacts both in your phone book and on your social networking site that your business is up and running and that you are the best thing since slice bread.

- Take advantage of the local press and media. Create your own press releases, do something within your local community, or just create a scoop that you will get you noticed for all the right reasons.
