First, you must acquire a thin bristled, ceramic rat combing brush available at any hair products store, or even a box chain store. As well you will need extra heavy protection hairspray, hair clips or bobby pins, and a smooth wooden brush, which are all available at any hair product store, or box chain store.
The first step to a smooth and fine looking back combed hair look, is to section the top layers of your hair in to one, two, three, and finally four separate layers starting from the bottom of your hair line going upwards. Starting with the lowest (the furtherthest to the bottom) row, first hair spray the roots of your hair. Following adding the hairspray to the roots of your hair, with a extremely thin bristled ceramic rat comb begin raking your hair towards the roots starting from about mid way up from your hair line. This will create the first sectioned layer of hair, and most ideally the largest 'poof' section of hair. Once you have successfully done the lowest section through out your head, put down the third row of hair and repeat. This time however, spray first, and then lifting and rooting your hair from about three fourths up. Again for the second row, you will hair spray the roots, lift and comb up towards the root of your hair, creating yet another section of poof. At this point in time you should have 3 separate layers of poof, with the fourth and highest layer still clipped up. With the fourth layer taking your wooden brush, lightly lift and smooth (brush) over the three layers, to create a smooth and adjusted look, so it your hair falls neatly. You will not back comb the final layer, however make sure that you spray through out the roots as well to keep them well kept and from falling too much and creating a heavy, flat look.
It is essential that you use a thin brittled rat comb to back comb your hair, otherwise your back coming will look extremely nest like and unpolished. In addition it is important that you section your hair, as creating only 1 layer will look huge, unruly, not smooth, and will eventually fall as it too heavy and has no supporting layers.
