How to Properly Position Your Wind Turbine

Zac Linzmeier
By selectively positioning your wind turbine you can cultivate more power. By positioning a wind turbine where the wind is funneled the amount of power it will generate is significantly higher. As wind is funneled it is pushed through a controlled region where the speed is increased. An optimal position for funneling the most wind is on top of your roof. When wind blows towards your rooftop, the rooftop blocks the wind and forces its direction into the restricted area therefore creating more power.

The wind's speed will amplify to two times the height of your rooftop. For example, if your roof is eighteen feet in height, the wind's speed will increase to thirty-six feet from the ground.

Aside from using your rooftop as a benchmark, look for a hill. Like your rooftop, a hill will block the direction of the wind and funnel it towards the restricted area therefore increasing velocity. Natural landmarks provide a great positioning option for wind turbines.

Your weather station should be able to provide you with information regarding the optimal location to generate wind based on data that shows which direction the strongest winds are coming from. Your local weather station will be able to tell you which direction the wind is coming from as well as its temperature and speed.

Another option is to use weather.com. They provide mappings for many areas across the country and you can get a visible feel for what part of your property gets the most wind current day in and day out. You may be surprised that certain areas receive far more wind than others do to the natural funneling created by hills or even tree lines and neighboring houses. Placing your wind turbine in the highest wind flow area of your property is a great way to produce more electricity with your current unit and greatly increase your electricity.

It seems like common sense but the higher you can get your wind turbine the faster the wind will be as well. It is important, however, to check with your local government first as there are often height restrictions. If there are be sure to attempt to get your wind turbine as close to the maximum allowed as possible, this will also allow you to generate quite a bit more electricity than if your wind turbine was only at roof level.

Hopefully you can take the tips that you learned here and position your wind turbine in such a way that you can generate the maximum electricity possible.
