How to Properly Run the Overload Power Play System in Ice Hockey

John Smith
The power play is a very important part of the game of ice hockey. One system that a lot of successful teams tend to use is known as the overload power play. When done correctly, this strategy is extremely effective and can help a team improve their power play immensely. In order for the overload to work correctly, every player on the power play unit must be positioned properly and work together.

As the name suggests, the overload power play works by overloading one side of the ice in the offensive zone. When a team is on a power play, they have an advantage in the number of players on the ice, so they typically have more room to work with and have more time to set up more complicated plays. In an overload, there is typically three players positioned near the boards. The player on high is usually a defensemen and is positioned inside the blue line near the top of the circle. The player down low is positioned slightly above the goal line between the boards and the net. There is also a player in between these two players who is positioned near the hash marks on the boards.

The remaining two players also play essential roles in the overload power play system. The other defensemen should be near the center of the ice, just inside the blue line, staggered with the other defenseman. The remaining forward player should be in front of the goal, acting as a screen on the goalie and attempting to tip potential shots.

The focus of the overload power play is to pass the puck around and look for potential openings when the defensive players are out of position. Since three players are on one side of the ice at the same time, this usually allows plenty of give and go opportunities, which can lead to a lot of scoring chances. After the shot, the player that is positioned in front of the net should look for rebounds. If a rebound is not available, the players should regroup and set up the overload again and try for another scoring chance.
