How to Protect Your Baby from Harm Before a Product Recall

Recalls Occur After the Harm Has Been Done

Malina Debrie
It's vital that we learn how to protect our babies and children from harm before a product recall. The sad fact is the government is not monitoring safety of products well enough before allowing their entrance into the retail market. Some products are not being checked and sent through strategic quality control processes before being sold. Since the government is not guaranteeing the safety of our children, we must.

Our children and their lives are at stake. Nobody hurts more than a parent when a child is hurt or killed due to a faulty product. Consumer advocate groups work tirelessly trying to make the government more responsible. They want them to be more proactive and less reactive. Before allowing items and products on the market. Yet, today in Walmart, I counted more than twenty one baby items on the national recall list. We as Americans are paying for benefits we are not getting.

How to Protect Your Baby From Harm Before a Product Recall: Use Common Sense When Making a Purchase

The products seem to be so cute. You think it will look nice on your baby, they will look cute in a particular stroller or the toy is something you think they will enjoy playing with. The problem is hundreds of these cute items that look like they are something your baby will love does not interest the baby. They interest you! Buy what your baby needs. It is okay to purchase items for your baby to play with and enjoy, but when doing so, take the time to consider what might happen if your baby pulls this the wrong way, removes a small part and places it in his or her mouth or maybe breathes in something from it that can cause an allergic reaction or suffocation. Use common sense when purchasing items for your baby.

There is always something on the market that is probably the forefather of a product. Quite often, new products are the offspring of a predecessor. If not, review the warning information on the back of the product. Manufacturers often provide hints to problems which are included in their warnings. Read the warning and then place the item back on the shelf. Or even better, write to the manufacture regarding the safety of the product.

How to Protect Your Baby From Harm Before a Product Recall: Discuss the Purchase or Item With a Family Member Before Making the Purchase

Sometimes a person who is completely separate from your immediate family will see something wrong before you do. That old adage, "two heads or better than one" is often vary true.

How to Protect Your Baby From Harm Before a Product Recall: Take Time To Think About The Product Before Purchasing

Often mother wit, intuition or whatever you want to call it will provide you with warnings that something might not be kosher with an item. You might feel that this could damage or harm your child. Or, you might just not feel good about giving your baby the item. When you have these feeling, don't make the purchase.

Your baby and small child are too valuable to purchase items for them on a whim. They depend totally on you for their safety. rHeaven forbid, but if something happens to your child, you will never forgive yourself. You will forever blame yourself for not thinking before giving you baby a toy that took their life for the rest of your life. Questioning yourself and an 'if only' will not correct the problem or bring a child back when a freak accident occurs.

Excellent article! I just heard they will be no longer making cribs with the drop down side. I always thought that seemed a little dangerous and I was extra careful every time I lowered it.
