How Can You Protect Buildings from Weathering?

Kristine Brite
Weathering happens when nature's elements - sun, water and wind - damage or change the materials on building exteriors. Preventing the elements is impossible, but protecting buildings from damage is a possibility. Although it affects different materials in different ways, weathering can alter the appearance of virtually any building component, including wood, concrete and metal. Paint is a common weathering-prevention solution.

Step 1

Wash the exterior of the building with a garden hose. Scrub away any stains with a long-handled scrub brush. Take down any fixtures like light fixtures and address numbers.

Step 2

Scrap off any peeling paint on old buildings. Sand new wood finishes before painting.

Step 3

Apply a primer to the entire building. The primer varies by the surface. Metal buildings require a special metal primer. Let the primer dry.

Step 4

Paint the finish layer. Acrylic latex paint is best for weather proofing. Use any color desired. Apply a few coats if needed. Use the ladder to reach tall points in the building.

Step 5

Apply a top coat after the paint dries.

Great tips! The top coat is so important and often forgotten.
