To be sure identity theft is not only a problem for individuals, but also for financial and lending institutions that are misled and defrauded by the perpetrators of this crime.
In order to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft there are some important measures you can and should take. These measures include the monitoring of your credit report, being sure to shred information any and all discarded documents containing personal information, and paying careful attention to what goes on around your private mail box.
Monitoring Your Credit Report
Monitoring your credit report is one of the most critical and fastest ways to prevent identity theft. It is highly recommended that you check your credit report atleast once a year. This is a bare minimum. There are 3 major credit reporting bureaus that you should monitor. These agencies are Experian, TransUnion and Equifax.
It's a good idea to check your credit report more frequently. Your options for doing so include utilizing services that will monitor and report any and all activity regarding your credit report on an ongoing basis. A notice is sent to you when there is abnormal activity.
These services can be found readily by searching online.
Document Shredding
Another measure you should take is to destroy any documents you discard that contains any personal information at all. Very often after identity theft has occurred the theft is traced back to documents that were obtained by simply rummaging through the trash bin. Personal shredders can be had for no more than $20.00 in virtually any office supply store.
Monitoring Your Private Mail Box
This is a must. Those who would steal your identity are well aware of the goldmine that is your mail box. Everyday mailboxes everywhere are being filled with bank statements, credit card statements and all sorts of sensitive financial information. You should make it a point to get to know your mail delivery schedule and remove mail quickly from your mailbox, and of course arrange to have your mail collected if you're going to be away on vacation or other extended periods of time.
Another option here is to install a mail box that requires a key in order to access your mail. This vigilance should also be applied to outgoing mail.
As you've read here there are ways to decrease your chances of becoming a victim of identity theft. I suggest that you become familiar with and utilize them all.
