The best defense against the winter cold when it comes to your skin and hair is to prepare your skin and hair for winter before the season gets freakishly cold. When that bitter winter wind and cold starts slapping you in the face, you want to be best prepared so you aren't caught off-guard. Your skin and hair will thank you for it. Here are great ways to keep your skin and hair protected from the winter elements this season.
Winter brings along dryness with it, which can wreak havoc on your skin and hair and overall health right in your own home. Your furnace or fireplace just blasting that hot dry air in your home is in no way healthy for any part of you. Your skin, hair, and mucous membranes (which have to stay moist so they can flush out the bacteria that will make you sick) suffer in the dry indoor heat winter causes. Quick fix, however- simply have a humidifier in the house, or make your own moist air. Boil a pot of water on the stove, or have a pan of water on the fireplace to allow the air to be moist when you are home. Your hair and skin will thank you for it.
Winter is no reason to forget your sunscreen or to quit drinking water. Your hair and skin depend on the protection from the sun even in winter (make your own sunscreen protection for hair: Homemade Sunscreen for Hair and Scalp ) so make sure you wear sunscreen daily. Drink water even in winter, because your skin and hair depend on you staying hydrated at all times, even in the cold. Doing just these 2 things will help to protect your hair and skin in the winter months.
Wind-whipped hair and chapped skin is absolutely no fun, so your best defense is to boost up your moisturization. Olive oil is my favored choice for night-time moisture and added to conditioner, leaves my skin and hair nice and supple, even after a wintry attack. Invest in a stronger moisturizer and conditioner (condsider a detangler or leave-in conditioner in winter) to protect against the winter cold.
Wear a hat and face mask in the bitter cold if you have to be outdoors for hours. Wearing proper gear (including sunglasses if there is a sun glare) helps to protect against that bitter cold and keep your hair and skin from drying out. Plus, it protects your skin from chapping or suffering from hypothermia as well.
