How to Protect Your Hair in the Winter

Tiffany Bell
Winter can be very harsh on your hair. The cold, dry weather can cause your hair to become dry, brittle, and unhealthy. On top of that, the indoor heating can cause your hair to dry out even more and is worse than any chemical that you could put on your hair. When your hair becomes dry and frizzy it gets harder to style and therefore will not look as good. There are some ways that you can protect your hair in winter from drying out and becoming unhealthy. Here are a couple of ways to protect your hair in the winter and come into spring with beautiful, healthy hair.

Use a hair conditioner after shampooing your hair to help prevent dryness. Any conditioner should do the trick, but if you have dry hair to begin with you may want to look for a hair conditioner that is made for dry hair. Also, invest in a deep conditioner. Use a deep conditioner on your hair during winter at least once a week. The deep conditioner will help protect your hair even more from becoming dry and frizzy in the winter.

Don't go outside in the winter time with wet hair. If you go outside in the cold weather with wet hair, you risk the possibility of your hair freezing, which leaves it prone to breaking and getting damaged.

Use hair tools, such as ionic hair dryers and ceramic plated straighteners that will lock in the moisture in your hair instead of stripping it. The winter takes enough moisture out of your hair and you don't need your styling tools to take even more. The less moisture in your hair, the drier and more damaged it will be.

Wear a hat or wear your hair up during winter time. Wearing a hat will help protect your hair from the cold and the wind during winter. Choose a hat that will not flatten your hair completely, but one that will just cover up most of your hair. Also, wearing your hair back and up, will help reduce the exposure amount to the cold weather also. Try cute updos or sleek chignons in the winter to help protect your hair from being damaged.

When washing your hair, use lukewarm water and not hot. Hot water will strip your hair of moisture and during winter you need all the moisture you can get in your hair. Make sure to use lukewarm water when washing your hair and then you can turn the water back to hot to wash the rest of you.

Rub a dryer sheet on your hair brushes and combs to help with static electricity during winter. Static cling is a huge problem in winter, since most people have their heat on and their house is all closed up. Instead of having to suffer through static hair in winter, use this simple trick that will take one minute to do.

I never really worried about my hair when I was younger, but now I find myself noticing and worrying more about damage. Ah, for those carefree days of yesteryear when my long, chestnut brown curls bounced in the wind.
