How to Protect Indoor Plants Against Asian Long-horned Beetles

Alicia Bodine
The scientific name for an Asian long-horned beetle is Harmonia axyridis. This beetle also goes by the name of Japanese ladybug and Harlequin ladybird. You can recognize the Asian long-horned beetles by their spots. These beetles can be harmful when they end up on indoor plants. It is best that you learn how to protect your indoor plants, rather than try to get rid of a full infestation.

You will need the following items to get rid of the Asian long-horned beetle:

* Asian lady beetle light traps
* Vacuum

Follow these steps to get rid of the Asian long-horned beetle:

Step 1:

Keep your lights dim. Asian long-horned beetles are attracted to light. They will follow the light and enter your house if they find an opening in a screen.

Step 2:

Patch up any holes in your window or door screens. This way you will prevent the Asian long-horned beetle from getting into your house and infesting your indoor plants.

Step 3:

Examine the walls inside of your home and check the caulk around your windows and doors. Making sure the Asian long-horned beetles have no point of entry is the best way to protect your indoor plants.

Step 4:

Set up some Asian lady beetle light traps. These traps will attract any beetles that are already in your home, taking the attention away from your indoor plants. The traps will capture the Asian lady beetles, and you can dispose of them at the end of the day.

Step 5:

Vacuum up any Asian long-horned beetles that you see. This will trap them in your vacuum so that they do not have a chance to attack your indoor plants. You can empty your vacuum cleaner bag, and place it in your outdoor trash can.

Tips:

It is best not to protect outdoor plants from Asian beetles. Asian beetles will control aphids that infest outdoor plants.

  • Aphids naturally control outdoor plants.
  • Simply vacuuming the Asian long-horned beetles can protect indoor plants.
  • Seal any entrances to your home so the Asian long-horned beetle can't get to your indoor plants.
