How to Protect Your Luggage During a Flight

Evan Nash
Flying can be a very stressful thing from the planning stages to the last moment that you step off of the last flight, and sometimes even beyond. However, there are ways that you can protect yourself on each step of the journey to make sure you have everything you need. There are ways for you to protect your luggage to make sure it arrives in tact after each flight. Here are a few suggestions:

1. Make sure to put your name, address and all phone numbers to reach you on every bag that you have to take with you. Don't simply stop at putting this information on the outside of your bag, make sure you put it on the inside of every bag as well. The more ways you leave to contact you the safer your belongings will be.

2. Remove tags from your previous or connecting flights before boarding your new ones to avoid confusion. The less information there is about where your bag is headed, the better. This is, of course, unless your bag does not have the destination sticker that you should check for from the agent who packed your bags.

3. When your bag comes off of the conveyor belt you should immediately check to see if it seems opened or unlocked. It is possible that your suitcases simply shook open after not being closed well, but you don't want to take the chance that things of yours were valuable and stolen.

4. If you do notice a problem with your suitcase you should not leave the airport until it has been addressed and/or resolved. Once you leave the airport you lose a lot of the privileges that you had once you were there and your story becomes less accessible.

5. When you speak to anyone from the airline regarding lost or damaged bags or suitcases make sure you get names, identification numbers or phone numbers for the employee you are speaking to. Many people are good at following directions and making amends for what has happened, but in case someone dropped the ball it would be good for you to let people know who you spoke to.

The bottom line with air travel is that your protection is contingent on how much you do to protect yourself. If you are not prepared and are not putting the right information in the right places you could lose very valuable things. Protect yourself and your valuables and learn how to prepare for flight.
