Look up the source
When surfing a website, always look for the "About Us" link and read up on what the site is all about. When possible, make a mental note of who runs the site and who maintains it. Most importantly, look out for the privacy policies that should be included on the site that you surf or even do transactions through. A lot of websites today collect information about the computer you use and what software you have. These websites can determine what sites you visit often and even where you are surfing from. If you go to website that does not have a privacy policy, this could be dangerous because that website will not be liable to any damage done to your computer or even to your personal lifestyle.
Keep your work and personal mail separate
The most sensitive information that you hold is most probably all in your work email. Work email is called as such because it belongs at work. Imagine a scenario where a hacker steals all the information from your office email just because you accessed it at home. Remember, it is always best to maintain at least two email accounts. One should be used strictly for work and the other for your personal activities. Then again, even your personal activities should be held at the highest importance so make sure that you do not keep personal information (such as credit card history, phone numbers, etc.) inside your email. Keep it safely inside your computer system and not anywhere in cyberspace.
Teach your children and friends
Your children will grow up definitely in a world that will be heavily dependent on the Internet. Right now, all your friends have a little information bout you and your email accounts and what sites you visit. It is therefore important to teach the people close to you to be careful about the information that they carry. Advise them to be wary of people who dig too much about information that pertains to you and your online lifestyle.
After browsing, clear the cache
This can never be stressed enough, especially in public places like Internet Cafe's. When you are done surfing, a history of your surfing experience is recorded on the computer. If this happens to be a public computer, make sure to ask a person in charge of the computer to erase the cache or history of your surfing activity. This will ensure that nobody can recover anything about your online information. This will also protect your right to privacy.
Lastly, about the best advice that can be given is to use common sense. Remember that the online lifestyle is the least protected one. People can get information about you with the click of a mouse. Safeguard the contents of your PC or laptop so that it is untouchable even by the people that you think you can trust the most.
