Tips on Protecting Your PC While You Are Online

Since the dawn of the 21st century, the Internet has evolved from what it once was in its nascent years. There are several security threats that come with the use of the World Wide Web. It is increasingly important to carry out Internet activities with extreme caution in order to prevent Internet fraud. Despite the numerous risks involved with the Internet, there are a number of security measures that can prevent the hazards faced on the Internet.

The most important means for protecting your computer is to install an up-to-date anti-virus program. Norton and McAfee are strongly suggested as they provide all the necessary security tools. AVG Free Edition is also a strong recommendation because it provides a strong anti-virus program free of charge. It is also recommended that you download Ad-Aware, a free and powerful anti-spyware program.

Apart from installing a credible anti-virus program, it is necessary to practice safe Internet habits. A common way of getting infected by a virus is through email attachments. Before you open any email attachment, it is necessary to scan it with your anti-virus software.

If you don't have one already, it is imperative that you install a firewall for your system. Firewalls prevent outside attackers from accessing your computer. They are strongly recommended especially for those who have DSL or cable modems because their Internet connection is always on. If you have the Windows XP or Windows Vista operating system, you should already have a firewall; but you can download ZoneAlarm as it is a free and competent firewall.

Another common threat accompanied by Internet use is identity theft. There are several viruses made especially for stealing your personal information. The best way to combat this is to form responsible Internet habits. Many services require you to create a password. Your password is the best defense from anyone accessing your personal information, therefore you have to make sure that your password is protected. Password guessing is common way of getting your password stolen. Make sure your password is unrelated to any personal information so it can't be easily guessed.

Also, make sure that your password has upper and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. You should also use a different password for every service you use so that if one password is stolen, the thief won't be able to hack into your other accounts. For example the password you use for your online banking service shouldn't be the same as your email password. And finally, you shouldn't disclose your password to anyone, even trusted family members and friends.
