How to Protect Your Surfboard

Probably the best investment you can make for your surfboard is a surf board case or surfboard bag. Having tried many different cases a over the years I have come up with a few suggestions as to what type of case that would be most beneficial to you. Of course it depends on personal taste as far as color goes. First off I buy or make a case that is a bit larger than my board.

If I use the case for carrying on top of my surf rack , I normally want a padded one that doesn't have any loose pockets that might get ripped when I am driving to the beach. If you cant buy a padded one for some reason , but a surfboard cover that has a bit of extra room in it and cut some soft foam to protect your board. I even take my fins off if I am going to travel for any distance. Mainly because it totally sucks if you get to the surf break and your board is so trashed that you cant surf.

So take care of it protect it like a little baby. If you are taking your surfboard on an airplane, bus, or a train. I recommend that you get a hard case. They sell them now that are so hard that you can almost drive a car over them and you will still have a surfboard. Airlines are famous for trashing surf boards. I didnt have a hard case my last trip to Central America but I took my fins off and packed my board with foam and it didn't have one ding on it when I arrived. When traveling around Central America I usually take the bus, because I dont like to drive down there. I put it on the bus underneath myself because some of the drivers will stack things on top of the boards. So keep an eye on them if you are traveling around the world surfing like I am at the moment.

Bring a few boards and make sure that you have extra leashes wax etc. I also have a repair kit that includes sun cure. I haven't had to use it yet . I guess the moral of the story is buy or make a good surfboard bag for your surfboard. You will much happier when you arrive at the surf break and your surfboard is in one piece. I am traveling with a dual bag that has some nice pockets on the side for my wet trunks. It has pockets on the inside that I store extra soft items that I may need for surfing. Extra trunks towels, that serve as good padding to protect my boards.
