How to Protect Yourself as an Unarmed Security Officer

Rosa Hayes
Being an unarmed security officer doesn't make your job any less dangerous than an armed security guard. An unarmed security officer may come in contact with a person who threatens them and they will need to take action but what are they to do if they are unarmed?

Protecting yourself as a security officer is very important and I can show you three different ways that you can protect yourself to turn a few everyday items into a weapon to protect yourself while on duty or in everyday life. These items that I am going to list are those that you will more than likely have on the job as a security officer.

Flashlights

Most security officers carry flashlights on them for hard to see areas or areas which possess minimal lighting. A flashlight can be a useful tool why being a security officer but if you are unarmed then you can also use it as a weapon. A steal flashlight works best but other flashlights can also be used as a weapon. I would try to purchase a flashlight that is at least big enough that you can hit an object without the object being close to your hand but you are also going to want one that is small enough around that it fits into the palm of your hand. Flashlights can be found at most hardware stores and in places such as Wal-Mart.

Keys

Keys can become a weapon for an unarmed security officer and you should use this to your advantage. If you walk with the pointed side of the key between your fingers then you now have a pointed object that can be used to stab. This is best done if the butt of the key is wide so that it has a less chance of slipping out from between your fingers.

Pens

Pens can also be used to stab at an object. Most unarmed security post won't let you use such things as mace so a pen might actually save your life some day. The bad thing about using a pen is that it does have the potential to slip out of your hand. I have seen many security officers rap tape around the butt of the pen to form a handle so that the pen doesn't slip out of your hand as easily.

There are a lot of unarmed security post that will not let you use anything that resembles a weapon or such things as a teaser gun or mace. If you are unarmed and walking through a dark alley you will probably want to use something to protect yourself in the event that something does take place to danger your life. I have been in the security industry for a few years now following some time off from it but I have decided to continue in this working field. My dad is a correctional officer and he also uses a lot of these same things while working in prison since he is unable to carry any type of weapon.

We were issued handcuffs and given training on handcuffing techniques. The deal is that you only are supposed to use them as a last resort in a situation that involves someone trying to physically harm you or someone else. It seems to me by that time it would be next to impossible to get handcuffs on a hostile combatant so I figure I could put my fingers through the big hole with both cuffs lapped together and use them as steel nuckles.
