How Protein Can Help You Lose Weight

Stephanie J. Graham
Protein is absolutely essential for every organism. It aids in the growth and repair of cells, and helps to produce enzymes and hormones. According to the Institute of Health's Dietary Reference Intake, we need a daily protein intake of 10%-35% or 45-218 grams. But how does it help in weight loss? What foods should be eaten to get the maximum amount of protein?

Protein is contained in almost every weight loss food program or diet plan. That is because they realize the benefit of protein in suppressing hunger. Protein amazingly sends messages to the brain to temporarily stop feelings of hunger. It also promotes lean muscle mass, and aids in maintaining blood sugar levels. With protein you will be able to burn fat faster, since it revs up your metabolism. It takes more calories to burn protein than it does to burn fat. The higher the metabolism the easier it is to burn fat.

There are many great sources of protein. Foods such as eggs, fish, meat, poultry, milk, and cheese are excellent sources of protein. Some other foods are nuts, seeds, peas, beans, lentils, tofu and yeast. Soy is a great source for those looking to lose weight because it is very low in fats.

According to the American Heart Association There are many diet programs that are high in protein but not all of them are safe. Many programs such as the Atkins diet neglect to include essential ingredients such as carbohydrates and fiber. Some of these diet plans can also increase the risk of heart disease.

When looking for a diet program high in protein one should look for plans that are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and carbohydrates. Included in the plan should be regular exercise, and a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

Some weight loss programs such as the Herbalife's Shapeworks program are labeled as heart healthy because they are rich in nutrition. This program is rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, herbs, antioxidants, carbohydrates and even protein.

Protein intake is highly important for the daily maintenance of the body. It can help in weight loss efforts in boosting the body's metabolism, helping to build lean muscle protein, and aids in preventing hunger pangs. As long as your protein weight loss plan is balanced with other essential nutrients the body needs these types of diets can be very effective. The key is to have a well balanced diet plan.
