Step #1: Buying or Making PSAs
Here again you are faced with the decision of either purchasing a pre-made PSA from a credible media organization or creating your own. Once you have decided on this initial choice you can move into the realm of budgeting.
Step #2: Budget
So now you need to decide on budget. Determine how much production or even purchase of a PSA will cost you and set a fundraising goal. You can meet this goal through sponsorship or other fundraising events.
Step #3: Call the Station
Call your radio station and ask to speak to the Public Service or Public Affairs director. Once you have introduced yourself or your organization formally, introduce your PSA theme and get the directors personal contact information so that you can more easily communicate in the future.
Step #5: Send Scripts
Be sure to send my mail, e-mail, or fax, your PSA script along with a cover letter to the director. The cover letter or cover information should include your contact persons name, address, phone number and e-mail. Also include the time frame in which you wish to have your PSA aired. Send this information soon after your initial phone or physical meeting.
Step #6: Deliver Tapes
Once you have been approved by the station take your CD or tape in personally, or mail it into the station with a label that clearly sates the title of your PSA. This title should correspond with the title you placed on the initial script you sent to the station.
Step #7: Check on Tapes
A couple days after your CD or tape reached the station make sure that you call and check up on their suitability in terms of quality. Ask if there is anything else the station needs from you or if you can do anything to make the broadcast of your PSA easier for the station. Be prepared to fulfill these requests if they are made.
Step #8: Thank You's
Again, don't forget to say thank you. It is very important for the present and for future communication that the station knows that you appreciate them.
