There are many reasons that people choose to write. Everyone has a story to tell and writers have different motivations for wanting to get their works published. Some desire fame, others fortune. Still others want to relay their experiences on one topic or another. The common denominator that they all have is that they all have a very distinct goal in mind.

In order to get the attention of publishers, you must make your work stand out. Publishers can literally receive hundreds of manuscripts or articles submitted every day, on various topics. How will you get the attention your work deserves.

There are certain standards that, as an author, you must style your article to. A well thought out and assembled piece will show publishers that you are in fact a professional and take pride in your work. What you submit will be an extension of who you are and what you are all about.

First, you must be knowledgeable about what you are writing about. Research your topic thoroughly and double check your facts and figures so you can write more proficiently. Obviously, this advice is more aimed at non-fiction works but can also be helpful with fiction by providing you with the background information that will help your characters come to life.

By being knowledgeable you should not want to give a recycled version of the subject of your work, but to put a fresh new spin on it. This will heighten your chances of being published. However, you may want to step out of your realm of knowledge at times to increase your powers of invention and writing skills.

Define who your target audience is and understand what they desire. Your individual works cannot appeal to everyone, it's just not realistic. Select a topic that is considered "hot" and has a large audience. When you realize who your targeted audience is, it will be much easier to write and market your works to them.

If you are planning to write a manuscript that will be considered for book publishing, you will want to determine a budget where you can have a clear and concise view of what expenses that you may incur. There are many expenses that must be considered before publication and I suggest that you get to know your prospective publisher's expectations.

You may also want to have family and friends act as an editor, reading your manuscript and pointing out any typographical errors that may have been overlooked by your spell check program. They may also make some suggestions that can improve upon your work.

Self promotion will spark interest in your manuscript or articles and can greatly affect the success you desire. Promotions on television, radio and newspapers can be generated through the use of a well written press release. You will need to produce a detailed marketing plan that outlines the strategy that will keep you organized and will help you prepare for every step of promoting your piece.

Set realistic and measurable goals that you can attain for your publishing project. This, along with your marketing plan, will help you achieve the success you desire. Learn from all your experiences, both good and bad. Discover what works and what bombs and make the proper adjustments in your marketing efforts.

Duplicate your positive results and take the time to step back and look at the big picture and results of your efforts. Reward yourself for a job well done. By following these steps you will no doubt gain the attention of publishers who will purchase your works.

Congratulations. You are now a professional writer.
