There are a few basic supplies that you will need to create this costume. The first thing you will need is a black outfit. Most people have a lot of black clothing, so this should be easy to find. This will be underneath the pumpkin, so if your clothing has a logo on it, it will be alright. Locate the following items around the house, and if you should be missing some, they can all be found at your local major retailer. You will need two pieces or orange poster board, a black permanent marker, scissors, a baseball cap that you are willing to ruin, and some twine.
You need to cut one of the orange posterboards into the shape of a pumpkin. This can take some time, and I recommend that you trace it out in pencil so that you can erase as needed. Once you have the shape that you are satisfied with, cut it out. After you have cut out the first one you can trace the outside shape onto the second sheet of poster board and cut it out so that you will have two identical pumpkins. Use a hole puncher to punch two holes into the top each pumpkin.
Once you have the two holes on the top you can thread twine through so that the costume can be worn over the shoulder. To make the costume more secure, you can punch additional holes in the bottom of the costume so that it is secure at the top and the bottom. This is important to do if you plan on being outside where it could be windy.
Drawn pumpkin lines onto the poster board, and if you are really creative you can add a jack-o-latern face. Start with simple triangles for the eyes and the mouth, and draw a large face. This is where you can use your creativity to make your costume unique. If you are unsure of how it will look, make sure that you trace your design out in pencil first before you go ahead with the permanent marker. If you are really unhappy with your permanent design, cut another pumpkin out of orange posterboard.
The baseball cap should be of brown color for the top of the pumpkin, but if it is not, you can cover it with brown felt or brown fabric. Cut two leaves out of green felt and glue them onto the top of the baseball cap. This will give you the finishing touches to your simple pumpkin costume. You will not be able to sit down in this costume, but it can be easily removed.
