Step 1
Contact a local children's home. Administrators are often happy to provide lists of items the children need for school, as well as ideas for small gifts that will make the holiday special. Even if you can only manage to spend a small amount, your contributions can make a huge impact on the kids.
Step 2
Remember the senior citizens in your area. There is the elderly man or woman who lives down the street, as well as people residing in assisted living facilities. Many of them do not have relatives nearby. Taking the time to drop off a small gift or issue an invitation for Christmas dinner at your house can brighten everyone's day.
Step 3
Donate to the local food bank. The holidays can be especially difficult for families when the parents are out of work and every cent counts. Most food banks provide lists of canned goods and other food items they need in order to make sure people who are going through a hard time can have a decent meal on Christmas day.
Step 4
Look up an old friend. Most of us have someone we used to know well but lost contact with over the years. Make a phone call or write a short note to let the individual know you remember and appreciate their friendship in years past. This will bring back pleasant memories for you and probably bring a smile to the lips of your old friend.
Step 5
Attend a worship service. Even if you do not belong to a particular faith, gathering with others to reflect on the origins of the holiday can provide a sense of connection with a wider community. Many Christian churches hold worship services on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning, so you should have plenty to choose from.
Tips & Warnings
Doing things for others often can help make the holiday seem less lonely if you do not have loved ones nearby. If you cannot be with family and friends for some reason, consider volunteering at a local soup kitchen. As with other types of holiday activities, it is possible to make so many commitments that you become too busy to really enjoy the good work you are doing. Instead of spreading yourself too thin, identify two or three ways you can help bring some joy into the lives of others and resist the temptation to try to do everything.
