How to Qualify for Government Grants for College

Kristi Patrice Carter
The cost of attending college is increasing year after year. According to recent reports released by College Board, the cost of tuition has increased on an average of $108 to $1398 since last year. This increasing cost can make it less affordable for many people aspiring to go to college. So, more and more people are depending on grants and other forms of financial assistance to pursue their dreams.

The Federal Government is the largest provider of college grants, and students should start early to get this assistance. It is best to start collecting information on the various types of grants right from when a person is a junior in high school. One should fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) when he or she is a senior in high school. It is a good idea to apply early for these loans because they are limited and are usually given on a first-come first serve basis.

The Pell Grant is the most common Federal grant and it is given to students who are otherwise financially unable, to help them to get a college education. Apart from grants, the Federal Government also offers work-study programs which provide a job to students on-campus to help them to meet their college expenses.

The first and foremost step to get a grant is to fill out the FAFSA. One must start by gathering the required information and documents well ahead of time as this can simplify the application process. In order to submit FAFSA, one must apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN). It is a four digit number that is used along with social security number and date of birth to uniquely identify each individual, and to provide access to the personal information for that individual. The dependency status has to be determined and based on this status the application may require information from parents. The student must complete and send the FAFSA before the specified deadlines. One can visit their official website to know the final dates for submission.

Once FAFSA is submitted, the Federal Student Aid will process the application and will send the Student Aid Report (SAR). This report is based on the information filled out in FAFSA and one must double check for discrepancies. If there are any, then necessary changes and modifications must be made to reflect the correct information.

Once this process is completed, one can start looking forward to acceptance letters from colleges. Based on these letters, one can determine the extra aid or money that will be required and can plan towards it. The choice of school can depend on the amount of available aid and other financial factors, apart from the courses and reputation. A careful selection must be made and a signed acceptance must be sent to the chosen school. Also, decline letters must be sent as soon as possible to the other schools so that other students can have an opportunity to get admission.

The financial aid office is a good place to look for additional assistance. Finally, one must remember that assistance in the form of loans has to be paid and one has to work diligently towards it.
