How to Make a Quickie Campsite Peach Cobbler

Malcolm Tatum
Who says you can't make a tasty dessert while enjoying a camping trip? You don't need any fancy equipment to make this tasty peach cobbler. A nice campfire, a Dutch oven, and a couple of simple ingredients is all it takes.

Things You'll Need:
Dutch oven
25 ounce can of peaches in heavy syrup
1 package of a single layer yellow cake mix

Step 1

Spread half of the yellow cake mix evenly along the bottom of the Dutch oven. Do not pack the mix.

Step 2

Open the can of peaches and dump the contents onto the yellow cake mix. Use a spoon to make sure the peaches and the juice complete cover the mix.

Step 3

Sprinkle the remainder of the cake mix over the top of the peaches. Make as even a layer as possible, but don't worry about completely covering the peaches.

Step 4

Place the lid on the Dutch oven and suspend the oven over the open fire. Check the cobbler after ten minutes to see how the crust is developing on the top. The juices permeate through both layers of the cake mix during the baking process to create top and bottom crusts that are soft and moist. Depending on the size of the fire and how close the Dutch oven hangs to the flames, the dessert may be finished in as little as fifteen minutes.

Tips & Warnings

Other types of canned fruit can also be used in this recipe. Fruit cocktail and pears packed in syrup work very well.

Don't attempt to make this recipe using a canned pie filling. The pie filling does not contain enough liquid to allow the crusts to form properly.
