If you wish to quit smoking entirely, or even to cut down a significant degree, the familiar sugary childhood treat called Pixy Stix, manufactured by the Nestle company, is, surprisingly or not, one of the most effective aids. Pixy Stix provide a double-benefit-- first, they give you the same hand-to-mouth coordination which mimics cigarette smoking; and second, their sugary substance and variety of semi-tart flavors are as appealing as cigarette smoke. Offbeat as it surely sounds, I highly recommend that anyone wishing to kick the cigarette habit purchase a pack of multi-flavored Pixy Stix.
Most other popular quitting-smoking aids focus on the aspect of nicotine addiction; but while replacing the nicotine in one's system with assorted means of patches, gums, etc., one misses the point that a large focus of cigarette smoking is having something in one's hand. These products are also potentially dangerous, as it is quite difficult to accurately gauge the amount of nicotine each individual is accustomed to in order to not overdo with these replacements. I personally "passed out cold" on a couple of occasions from using a nicotine gum which had a higher concentration of nicotine than my system was used to or could tolerate.
You may also see people in the early stages of quitting who gnaw on such things as straws and toothpicks; but as they beaver away at these objects, it rarely gives them any sense of satisfaction, for chewing does not have the same type of appeal as holding an object in one's hand.
I have also known people whose attempts to get rid of the smoking habit have included such extremes as hypnotherapy and reliance on anti-depressants. While these methods provided temporary diversion from the focus on smoking, most were not fully satisfied with the results in the long run. Unless cigarette smoking is posing a serious and immediate threat to one's health, these types of extraordinary aids are usually unwise.
Pixy Stix, on the other hand, have no drawbacks, unless one has a health condition such as diabetes, which is contraindicative to the use of sugar. Pixy Stix, which are now a little smaller than they were decades ago, are portable, easily carried in a purse or pocket; the flavors themselves are quite enjoyable; and they provide for both the hand-to-mouth coordination and need for taste that replicates the cigarette smoking habit. Pixy Stix, naturally, do not contain nicotine; but as I have seen in most cases replicating nicotine in one's system is far less necessary to quitting than many people have come to believe. So if you're serious about kicking your smoking habit, or simply cutting down, buy and carry a package of Pixy Stix-- it's certainly worth a try, and it has a very good chance of succeeding.
