Choosing the right painting technique is difficult because of options available. The technique and method depends on the results desired. Rag rolling is a technique that leaves walls with a velvet texture or rippled look. Different fabrics create different looks. Rag rolling paintings are easy with proper preparations and advise.

Types of Paints

Water-based paints are best for rag rolling techniques. Rag rolling paints are called glace paint. Water based paints are quick drying latex.

Types of Rags

Use different rags for varying effects and textures. The most common are cheesecloth, terrycloth, burlap and cotton. Cheesecloth and cotton will leave a smoother surface. Burlap will leave a rougher finish. Plastic bags can be used, to create a parchment effect.

Basic Patterns

Rag rolling can create many different patterns .The cloth can be used to blot designs on the wall, similar to sponge painting. To do this ball up the rag and blot the walls. To create a textured look drag the fabric up and down the wall. For different textures and designs purchase special rag rollers that allow rags to be placed onto the roller. This technique will give your creation a more uniform appearance.

Simple How To Tips

First, paint your walls with a roller brush or flat paint brush in your color of choice. The desired color effect is a result of the rag rolling, so chose a simple color for the base coat. Beige,sage and egg shell are three excellent base colors.Use a subtractive method or remove some of the base coat before it dries. Then apply the rag coating. Another idea is to let the base coat dry then rag roll paint over the dried base coat.Remember that rag rolling is messier than traditional painting, so be prepared to use extra drop cloths. Another tip,rag rolling painting proceeds quicker and is more effective when done by two people.

With a few simple tips and a bit of practice, rag rolling painting can be easy. The end result is a creative and alternative paint texture to your home's walls, that people will complement for years to come!
