How to Raise Your Metabolism to Lose Weight Through Weight Training

Your body stores fat for use as fuel. If that fuel isn't used or burned off, you will gain weight. Too many people want to lose weight with pills and diet plans alone. That doesn't work, because your metabolism is still the same. Yes, changing your diet will help, but without exercise, odds are you will fail.

1. You don't have to spend hours in a gym or run for miles a day. You can speed up your metabolism without hours of exercise. One way to do this is with weight training. There are three basic exercises, dead lifts, squats and the bench press. These routines work the major muscles by group, so you can get a complete workout. Building muscle boosts metabolism, which in turn burns calories.

2. Weight training two or three times a week for 30-45 minutes is enough. You should start light for the first couple of weeks, then work up to heavier weights. A good rule of thumb is set a number of repetitions you want to reach with a certain amount of weight. When you can easily bench press 50 pounds 10 times, add 5 more pounds. This will build your muscles slowly and not make you so sore you want to quit.

3. Sticking with any routine can be difficult. You need determination and the willingness to stick with it. You may not see much difference at the beginning, but in time, you will not only lose weight, you will feel stronger and healthier because you are stronger and healthier. It may even become a good "habit".

4. Anyone considering weight training should check with their doctor before starting a program. It does demand some level of fitness to begin with, so if you need to lose a lot of weight, this type of training may not be the best plan for you. You may want to consider walking to improve your overall condition before attempting a weight training regime.

5. There are also some foods that help raise metabolism. Some of these foods are water, (yes water), broccoli, oatmeal, hot peppers, low-fat yogurt, grapefruit, and lean turkey. By combining foods that boost metabolism with weight training or other forms of exercise, your body will burn more calories and the extra weight will begin to disappear. The biggest bonus, though, is how happy and energetic you will feel with a proper diet and a strong, healthy body.
