It can also be a bonus for the company because it can significantly boost sales for the company, for that particular item. Rebates can be a small amount; such as $20.00, or they can be in excess of $100.00. The price of the rebate depends on the price of the item purchased. Depending on the cost of the item, this can be a big savings for the customer, in the end.
Although rebates can be a good savings for the consumer, they can also be a good marketing tool for the company. When purchasing an item that offers a rebate, there are things to be aware of, so be wary. Companies may attach requirements to the rebate; stipulations that the customer is not aware of, until it is too late. It is wise to do your research and homework on the rebate before jumping into buying the item. Make sure that there are no other purchase requirements attached to the rebate. Some companies will stipulate that the customer must purchase more than just that particular item in order to retrieve their rebate.
Other things that should be considered when purchasing an item with a rebate attached are:
1. Is the company a well-known company that you have done business with before and trust? Usually the well-known companies will make good on their rebates. Some smaller companies may not follow-through with their rebates, so if you are fine with paying full price for an item, should you not get your rebate, then you are probably safe in purchasing it.
2. When you leave the store, make sure that you have all the paperwork that you will need to mail in with the rebate. Usually you will get the regular receipt, then a separate receipt for the rebate. The mail-in receipt should still have the date of purchase on it, as well as the barcode.
3. Make sure that you make copies of everything for your own, personal records before mailing anything in. This way, if there are any questions on the companies' part, you have all the correct documentation.
4. Finally, make sure you know the dates for the deadlines. There are usually cut-off dates for when the rebate has to be mailed in by. If you get the rebate in a day too late, you will probably be out of a rebate.
Rebates can be a huge help to the consumer, as well as to big, well-known stores like, Sears, Home Depot, and Best Buy. The stores want the customers' business, and offering a rebate on a popular or particular item is one of the best and oldest sales tactics. It is also a great way to promote products, and boost sales for the company. If you trust the company, and have had a good experience with them in the past, chances are that your rebate will be rewarded.
On the other hand, if it is a new company that you may not have had any prior experience with before, trying to get a rebate can be time consuming, frustrating, and disastrous. Trying to get a rebate from a small, un-known company may not be productive. That is why you should always make sure that the product you are purchasing is actually the one you want. You should never purchase a product strictly for the rebate. Instead, you should always view the rebate as an extra bonus. That way, if you never receive the rebate, you are still completely happy with your purchase.
If you know and understand the rebate process, it can make "buying" a lot easier. You, as the customer, can still hold the purchasing power in your own hands.
