How to Rebound Against Larger Opponents

Basketball Skills for the Little Guys

In the game of basketball, the little guy is usually at an extreme disadvantage when it comes to rebounding. Fortunately, there are some equalizers that can help to even the playing field a bit. If you know how to do it, you can rebound with the big boys regardless of your size.

The first thing you should know about rebounding with larger opponents is that position is everything. If you have proper inside position and learn how to box out, then it will matter little how big your opponent is. There will be occasions where the opposing rebounder will be able to simply go over your head for rebounds. Nothing can change your size difference. Still, if you know how to position yourself correctly, you can get your fair share of rebounds and loose balls.

Position is all about where the ball is in the air. The single best way to understand angles and positioning is to practice rebounding. When a player shoots the basketball, you should turn and position yourself with your back to the shooter. You do not want to be too far under the backboard or basket, as this will cause you to lose position.

The best thing you can do is get a wide base, and begin backing into your opponent. This is called boxing out. You want to get them on your back and move them towards the shooter. The more room you can clear the better the chance of getting the rebound.

By having your opponent on your back, they have little chance of getting the rebound without climbing your back. If you are unable to get the rebound, you will still have a decent chance to draw a foul.

Another key to rebounding against larger opponents is hustle. Simply wanting the ball more is the single most important key to rebounding, regardless of your size. A man that is only 5 feet tall will out-rebound a 6 footer if they want the ball a little bit more. Do not be afraid to mix it up with the big boys. Rebounding is all about desire.

Timing is another important aspect of rebounding against larger opponents. Many larger opponents will not have as good of timing as a smaller guy. You have to remember that the person that gets the rebound is not always the guy that jumps first or last. The key is to jump so that you contact the basketball at the pinnacle of your jump. This maximizes the potential for rebounds against larger opponents.
