How to Receive a Lousy Gift Graciously

Christina Armani
Everyone receives a lousy gift once in a while., there's no getting around it. No one is immune or pardoned from receiving them. With many special occasions like holidays, birthdays, and milestone events, you're bound to get a lousy gift from someone like a coworker or distant relative.

If you suspect that it might be a lousy gift, try to wait until you get home and open it in private. If the person insists that you open it right away, the best thing to do is to avoid looking disappointed. Have a happy expression, and be thankful that they got you something. Smile and try to show some gratitude and appreciation. Be vague when commenting on the gift, or try to keep it to a minimal thanks. It is the thought that counts, and you were thought of.

If you have a poker face and are worried that your face will reveal your disappointment, give the person a huge so that they can't see your face. Whatever you do, it's a bad idea to talk badly about the gift behind the persons back. Chances are that word will get around your friend, and this will only make him or her feel worse. It'll also create an awkward and embarrassing moment the next time you two meet or talk on the phone.

You should keep in mind that the present may win you over in the end. Just because you do not like it now, it doesn't mean it will not grow on you. A person's taste is subject to change after all. The gift might increase in value over the years especially if it's a collectors item and might be worth holding on to.

If you've really thought about it and still don't want to keep the gift, you can try to sell it to someone, or sell it online. If you do chose to sell it online, be careful not toyou're your real name so the gift giver can't catch you in the act. Regifting is also a good option to consider if you really do not want to keep the gift. However, the downside to selling or regifting is that you might end up having to explain why you don't have the gift anymore. If this happens you can always say that you lost it and looked everywhere for it and feel terrible about it.
