How to Recognize and Develop Your Psychic Abilities

A Journaling Method to Get Started Quickly on a Customized Path

Richelle Hawks
Most people experience at least a couple highly coincidental events in their lifetime that point to a possibility of psychic dynamics. Sudden promptings that prove to avert personal disasters, detailed dreams of future events that come true, and knowing when a distant loved one is in danger are only a few examples of common psychic related experiences.

It seems some people have story after story with these kinds of things. Some even have memories of talking to mysterious companion-type beings in childhood, or have the natural ability to see auras. There's a lot of real evidence that what we now label as paranormal or psychic events are objectively real.

Whether or not you're naturally gifted, or even if you don't know, you can bet there are ways you can go about developing your natural psychic talents along your particular lines of interest, and following a customized path that is perfect for you. Like any talent, proficiency and payoff come with practice.

Recognizing your psychic talents and setting goals

First, it is important to recognize your existent abilities (or even lack thereof) and decide upon a goal. Your course of action in psychic development depends greatly on your aims; there are lots of paths to be taken to many destinations.

Although the subject may be ethereal, there's no reason your method should be. I suggest planning your goals and notes on paper. Sometimes, the act of writing helps ideas to come together in a concrete, cohesive way, both creatively and energetically. It's the first step toward bringing a desired goal out of the realm of thought into the tangible world.

Record your psychic experiences

In an unused journal or notebook you will set aside for your psychic development, begin by writing down notes or paragraphs about the actual experiences you've already had. Remember no one need see this, so don't hold back. You may want to make this step a work in progress, rather than doing it all in one sitting. If this sits on your backburner for a while, you may find more experiences come to you.

I have found one of the best times for deeper reflection of more abstract and elusive things is right as I get in bed. Maybe it's just me, but once I begin preparing for sleep and unconsciousness, I often remember dreams of the previous night. Although this psychic journal isn't necessarily related to dreams, there is a similar reflective, meditative mind state involved.

After you are satisfied with these journaled psychic experiences, look them over and see if you notice an overall theme. Perhaps you have had mostly experiences in which you "heard" a voice telling you pertinent information. Maybe you have had strong impressions about things that are going to happen to people. Maybe you have had many experiences in which you have precisely "guessed" or known obscure, detailed information, without much effort. Your experiences may not have a pattern, and that's fine too.

Name it

If you do come up with a thematic pattern, you are likely looking at your natural psychic talents. The next step is to do some reading about the type of talent you have. Let's take my first example above-you have been prompted by a voice with pertinent information. Read anecdotes and information about these specific types of abilities.

You can search using key words on the internet, library catalogues, Google books, or find such information in good general psychic development type books. In your journal, take notes on different names and experiences associated with this type of ability. You'll find that terms and dynamics associated with this are: clairaudience, mediumship, spirit guides, ESP, psychokenisis, telepathy, and more.

Understand the point of this step is not to slap a label on and limit yourself, rather, it is to simply identify your natural talents. It will actually open up more possibilities ultimately.

Set specific goals

The next step is to articulate what you would like to accomplish on your psychic path. There are many things to consider. What is your level of interest: casual, moderate, intense? How much time are you willing to devote to this undertaking? Do you want this to be private? Would joining some kind of group help you learn?

There are practical dynamics as well. Psychic ability is not completely compartmentalized; it becomes part of your personality and psyche. Going down a road that interests you is important. For example, if you are a nurse, or body worker, or have an interest in health you may be interested in aiming toward a "medical intuitive" goal.

If you're involved with the paranormal already, such as a ghost hunting group, maybe you'd like to attempt to communicate with ghosts. Perhaps you'd like to be a very successful medium with lots of clients, and making a lot of money.

Maybe you just want to do some general work and see where the path takes you. That is a goal in itself. Any goal is valid, but it is extremely helpful to be working toward something. Write these ideas down in your journal.

Putting it all together

Once you have identified your talents and set your goals, explore how and if the two things can be put together. Taking my example of clairaudience and a medical intuitive goal, it is easy to see how this becomes a tailor made path for you. Using your natural talents of "clear hearing" combined with your love of healing, it should be rather obvious how to proceed. You'll want to find books and information about developing your clairaudience, along with books and resources having to do with energy medicine, natural health, and the like.

The point here is simply to create a customized path for yourself. Although there are protocols, dogmas, rhetoric, traditions within methods, and even certifications and educational requirements in some cases, the development of psychic ability is largely a creative, individual, DIY style road. It is in your interest to make the most of this dynamic.

This journal method I've outlined is only the beginning, and you'll see it's a quick and effective way to jump start your psychic development. If you feel the journaling is very helpful, I suggest continuing as you begin your practice. Recording results, notes to yourself, etc. can be very helpful and motivating.
