How to Record an EVP

Recording Real Ghost Voices

EVP Researcher
E.V.P. (Electronic Voice Phenomena) is a form of I.T.C. (Instrumental Trans Communication). I.T.C. can either be audio, video or picture evidence that is thought to be of paranormal origin. In this article I am going to discuss the methods that I use in capturing EVP's. I will explain the two different types of audio methods that I use. One is audio recordings, and the other is using a "Ghost Box". These two methods have been very fruitful in capturing these elusive voices.

The first (and easiest) method that I use to capture EVP's is very basic. I use a digital recorder (micro cassette recorders work well too) to record sessions in Paranormal Rich environments. One of my best recorders that I use a lot, is an RCA RP 5022 digital recorder. I put this on SP mode when recording. The SP has more "background noise" and allows for better reception of the very low Hertz Frequencies that EVP's are associated with. If you would like to give this a try, first purchase (or borrow) a recorder. When I say "Paranormal Rich" environment, try this first. A small cemetery at night. These seem to always have some activity. When you are comfortable in investigating small cemeteries, move up to purportedly "Haunted" locations. When arriving at an investigation location, I first speak out-loud and explain what I am doing. I tell "them" that I am attempting to gather evidence that life goes on after we die. I then explain that the recorder will not hurt them. I tell them that it merely makes a copy of their voice. I have another piece of equipment at home that MAY allow me to hear what they say. (This is in reference to a computer.) I ask questions allowed and pause for 10 to 15 seconds between questions. This "gap" gives them time to answer without my voice being captured at the same time they are talking. I have found that if you are going to capture EVP's, no more than ten minutes are required to gather evidence. One thing that I would like to say about the "Questioning". I do not ask "Provoking" questions. I ask basic questions. I have found that "Provoking" questions get negative paranormal activity. Normal questioning has NEVER brought on negative activity (in my experiences).

Another digital recorder "trick" that I use is this. Music is liked by the living and the dead. I researched on line and found "Popular" songs from the past. (ie.. keyword search Popular songs from 1870 to 1880.) I then download these songs to an MP3 player. I use external speakers to play these songs prior to starting the digital recorder. I use their music to get their attention. If you think about it, they may not have heard their favorite song for 100 plus years! This is a good way to Positively get their attention and initiate communication with you (via the recorder).

The second method of gathering Electronic Voice Phenomena is using a "Ghost Box". A ghost box is a modified pocket radio that scans through radio frequencies very quickly. I set this on the AM band. I use AM because there is less radio traffic that comes through when I am talking with the ghosts on the Ghost Box. A Ghost Box is often called a "Telephone to the Dead". It is called that because external speakers are hooked up to this modified radio and you can hear the Ghost Voices in real time. Kind of like talking to a person on the phone. I also use my digital recorder to record the Ghost Box sessions. I can then listen to them at a later time to see if I missed anything. Once I am set-up in a location, I turn on the radio and set it to scan through the AM stations. (Note: the Ghost Box goes through a little over 6 stations per second. Therefore, if you are hearing someone answer you in sentences, it is NOT the local disc Jockey!) I then start asking questions similar to the questioning that I use in the Digital Recording method.

Once you have gathered your potential evidence, you will need to give it a better "Listen". I put the audio files on my computer and listen to them using software called "Audacity". Keyword search this program. It is free to download from their site. The audio file can be filtered, amped, slowed down, sped up,...etc. This will help immensely in finding the EVP's hidden in the Audio recordings. Another free program is called "Wave Pad" and can be downloaded from their site. However, when starting out, use Audacity first. It is more user friendly. Wave Pad is more advanced and can be used to pull our more EVPs when you get more familiar with the "Cleaning Process". Give my methods a try. Have fun in doing the recordings and analysis. Be safe when investigating. And share your work with others.

Kelli, I have recorded EVPs in the day as well as the night time. I "Get" more EVPs at night, however. At dusk is a good time too.

Very interesting! Does it have to be done at night? All of the cemeteries are closed here when it get's dark.
