How to Recover a Forgotten Windows XP Password

Learn How to Recover Your Forgotten Windows XP Login Password

If you are like me then chances are you have gone to start up your computer only to find that you have completely forgotten your Windows XP password. This makes it impossible to login to your computer and has essentially turned your thousand dollar desktop of laptop PC into a fancy looking paper weight. Not to worry though, I have a few great methods for recovering your Windows XP password.

The first, and simplest, method to recover your password is to start guessing. The vast majority of passwords are something that is personal to you. A family member's name, the name of your childhood dog, your birthday or something else that you were sure you would remember. If you don't recall ever setting a password you may want to consider that you went with a default which is generally "administrator".

Once you have exhausted the guessing game you still have a couple more options for recovering your forgotten Windows XP password. When you were first starting out Windows would have prompted you to create a password recovery disk. If you did this then great; simply pop it in and get to work. It should also be noted that your password recovery disk will allow you to reset your Windows XP password even if you have changed it since creating the recovery disk. This is because it doesn't remember your password, rather it is unique to your install of Windows and simply detects that it is in the proper computer then allows you to change your password to whatever you desire.

If neither of these options work for you then your next best bet is to use a third party program designed for just this purpose. The Internet contains a vast number of such Windows XP password recovery programs which will allow you access to your computer. In order to run these simply download one and either put it on a flash drive or burn it to a CD then change your boot sequence to boot off of this media instead of the hard drive. This program will clear your current password and then allow you to select a new password for future use on your Windows operating system.

If none of these are an option you have one last resort, reinstall windows. The disadvantage here is that you will need to wipe your computer and start over which means you will lose any programs and documents that you may have had. Because of this you should refrain from a reinstall unless none of the above options allow you to recover your Windows XP password.
