How to Redecorate Your Guest Room

Chen Salis
Decorating a guest room can be tricky. On one hand you might feel like ' It is my house, I will do what I want with it in terms of decor,' but on the other hand you want the guest room to be inviting and comfortable in the event that you do have a guest to stay in the room. At my house it seems as if the guest room has become a place to store almost everything. We have a very big house with very minimal clutter as I strive for that minimalistic look. However, every time I enter the guest room,I have to straighten the guest room up. I find toys under the bed, books in the bed, as someone loves to read in this room. There are usually socks on the floor, baseball bats and gloves tossed into the closet and gum wrappers on the bedside table. I finally put my foot down and redecorated the guest room. I feel that this room is no ones recreation room or storage unit. This room should be for the comfort of our over night guests.

I began the redecorating process by entirely clearing out the guest room and closet. I gave it a thorough cleaning, I vacuumed, dusted the woodwork, washed windows. I strategically placed scented candles throughout the room. I added an electric air freshener, set on low of course to prolong its life span. I wanted the room to feel fresh and inviting by scent alone.

Next I placed the bed in a position to prevent the sun from falling upon the eyes of my sleeping guests. I placed a plain white fitted sheet on the bed and nothing more, exclusively to keep the mattress from getting dirty or dusty. I placed sheets, pillows and a comfortable blanket in the closet along with ten clothes hangers for my guests to unpack.

As I arranged the bedside table, lamp and dresser areas I kept it simple. On the dresser I placed a small basket filled with miniature soaps, shampoos, tooth paste and tooth brushes, lotions, tissues and mouth wash. In the dresser I placed several towels and wash cloths and toilet paper to make the guest bathroom and bedroom self sufficient.

On the walls I placed one simple plaque that wishes sweet dreams to my guests. On the bedside table a bottle of water and a book of short stories for bed time reading. I also placed a simple oak rocking chair near the window.

I achieved a simple yet inviting guest room. I can simply prepare the bed before the guests arrive, and this makes the room less inviting for my family to get comfy as this room is intended for a guest. Its a great idea as I have not had to clean up any messes in here since I removed the television and telephone. Funny how that works out.

It is easy to create a warm and comfortable guest room, just keep in mind it will not realistically be used very often, so keep it simple yet elegant for the best overall effect possible.
