How I Redecorated Our Bathroom into a Tropical Paradise for Under $50

Jackie Hoffman
Back in February I was really starting to get sick of 2 things. The cold weather and our humdrum decor. Sometimes you just need a change in your surroundings and the easiest thing to do is redecorate. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, but I wanted to make sure that my efforts would definitely be noticed. I decided to redecorate the our bathroom. After all, most of us spend a lot of time in there throughout the day, so we might as well enjoy what we see when we go in there.

It is also the smallest room in our house, so it wouldn't take a lot to redecorate it. Since I love the beach, I figured I would cheer up the bathroom in the dead of winter with something more tropical. I gave myself a budget of $50 and head out. Over the course of a few weeks, I was able to get everything I wanted for my bathroom.

I decided that I should choose something I really liked as the "focal" piece and take inspiration on that. I found a palm tree fabric shower curtain on clearance for only $12. It was a nice quality, very thick and it was going to last a while. After hunting around in the store, I found a section with even more of the palm tree themed bathroom items. I was able to get 2 matching hand towels and palm tree shower curtain rings for another $7.

The other things I wanted, were some matching washcloths, bathroom rug and toilet seat cover. The store had some really nice tropical themed ones that would match perfectly with the palm trees, but it would take the rest of my budget to purchase them. Since I still wanted something to add to the walls, I knew I couldn't get them. So I chose to get the washcloths, the rug and toilet seat cover in a green that matched the shower curtain to a "T".

Next, I headed to the craft store. I had a few coupons on me and went through the fake flower section. I picked out some hibiscus flowers and other tropical looking plans for the bathroom. This cost me just under $10. I was going to put some in a vase I already had on top of the bathroom organizer. I then took the hibiscus flowers and attached them to the ends of my towel rack with floral wire I already had. This really spruced up the place and made it look really unique. I then took the remaining flowers and arranged them over the top of the bathroom door with more floral wire and thumb tacks I already had.

My last stops were the dollar store and some thrift stores. At the dollar store, I found palm tree wall stickers and hibiscus stickers that I placed over the sink in a nice arrangement and along one of the walls. I didn't use too much because I think too many wall stickers look tacky. These stickers only cost $2 total.

At the thrift stores I found a palm tree painting for only $5, some vintage Hawaiian plate coasters and a bag of fish to hang on the wall. The Hawaiian coasters were still in the package with maps of Hawaii on them and hula dancers on the side. I arranged these on top of the bathroom mirror. I then took the palm tree painting and hung it above the towel rack and hung the fish along side the painting. The total for the thrift store finds were only $9.

I now had $10 left and I wanted something to hang on the door and above the light switch. I love to paint, cross stitch and do other crafts so I headed back to the craft store with more coupons. I found a paint by number beach scene and a sea shell cross stitch kit and bought these. Not only did I keep myself busy painting and cross stitching, but I was able to decorate with them as well. I placed them in frames I already had. They completed my tropical bathroom and brought the total to $48!
