How to Reduce the Appearance of Cellulite

Laura Leiva
No matter how thin you are, every body type is susceptible to cellulite. Cellulite is the dimpled appearance under the skin, usually around the hips, buttocks and thighs. The cause of cellulite is a result of fatty deposits being shifted around under the skin by muscle tissue, leading to the "orange peel" texture. While there is no cure for getting rid of cellulite permanently, there are a variety of treatments that may help reduce cellulite if done regularly.

Massage

One way to reduce cellulite is through a massage treatment. The most popular treatment- Endermologie- uses an electric massager to manipulate fatty deposits in order to reduce the amount of cellulite on the body. The massager is comprised of rolling balls, which massage and break up fatty tissue. The procedure lasts between 30 and 45 minutes and must be done no less than 10 times before results are noticed. Endermologie has been approved as a method for reducing cellulite temporarily, and must also be done to maintain a smooth appearance. Some salons and spas also use hand massage as a way to manually break up fatty deposits, helping to reduce cellulite.

Body Wraps

Applying a body wrap to the thighs and hip area is often a short-term solution for reducing cellulite. You may do a wrap at home, or visit a spa to have one applied for you. Wraps feature ingredients such as kaolin clay, sea salt and essential oils like juniper or lemon, which all help to remove excess water trapped under the skin. Applying clay, salt and essential oil to the skin and then wrapping the body in cloth sheets removes toxins and excess water from fat cells, reducing cellulite temporarily.

Improved diet

While it is impossible to get rid of fatty deposits, changing the diet and exercising helps to reduce cellulite. Eating plenty of fiber, fruits and vegetables helps to reduce retained water, improve skin tone and remove toxins from the body. Drinking at least 64 ounces of water also helps to reduce excess water from being retained in fat cells, and allow skin to be increasingly supple. A change in diet and exercise also improves the overall appearance of the body, not just reducing cellulite.
