How Can I Reduce Inflammation: Omega-3 Fatty Acids Found in Salmon

Lisa Kay
If a magical wand-toting fairy appeared, ready to give you anything you wanted, what would it be? If you are healthy you will probably say money. If your health has been compromised, regaining your health is all that matters. I would ask my fairy for perfect health. Until my fairy shows up, there's one very important thing I can do to improve my health and prevent future disease.

Reduce the inflammation in my body

In some parts of the medical community, inflammation is being called the 'new plague of our times'.

Why is this so important? Because inflammation is at the root of the diseases that people suffer with, such as arthritis, diabetes and cancer, just to name a few. Eliminating sugar from your diet and adding Omega-3 fatty acids will go a long way toward reducing inflammation in your body.

Where can I get Omega-3?

The body does not make Omega 3-s so you need to get it from your diet. Fish is not for everyone, especially salmon and sardines but if you like fish your body will thank you for it. I like sardines packed in mustard and my favorite way to eat salmon is in a salad. I prefer the packets of wild caught Alaskan salmon.

Salmon steaks are easy to prepare by baking, pan frying or grilling. My favorite way of cooking a salmon steak is to place it in foil packet with sliced onions, drizzle with lemon juice, then bake at 350 degrees.

Salmon is a tasty way to improve your health, in moderation. Eating more than three daily servings of fish can increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke. Also, If you are a type 2 diabetic, fish oil supplements can slightly raise fasting blood sugar levels.

Fish Oil Supplements

Another concern with eating fish is the risk of mercury contamination. If you don't like fish or want to avoid toxins in fish, try fish oil or cod liver oil supplements instead. Check to make sure the supplement you choose is free of contaminants.

It's important to take vitamin E along with your fish oil supplements to prevent it from turning rancid in your body. Some brands of fish oil already have vitamin E in them to prevent it from becoming rancid in the bottle.

The important point of this article is not to convince you to eat fish but to convince you how critical it is that you take control of your health by reducing inflammation in your body. Eating salmon twice a week and eliminating sugar are only two of my ways.
