-Budget. One of the most effective ways to reduce how much you spend on food is to set a limit on how much you spend every time you go to the store. Like I stated before, most people don't realize how much they really spend on groceries every month. Moreover, most people are impulsive buyers. They place whatever looks appetizing at the time in their shopping cart, even if it's an expensive item. This also brings up another concern. It's better not to go grocery shopping when you're hungry because often times you're craving foods that aren't budget-friendly.
-Make a list. This kind of ties in with budgeting. If you plan out your meals for the week and write down the ingredients that you need for each, when you go to the grocery store you already know what to buy and won't buy on impulse near as much. Consequently, chances are that you won't spend as much money either. Plus, plan meals that only require cheap foods like pasta noodles, rice, and beans. You can find many great inexpensive recipes online just by googling.
-Grow a garden. If you have the time and the patience, growing a garden is a splendid way to save money on food expenses. It doesn't have to be a large garden. Just choose a few vegetables that you buy and eat a lot and grow those. Tomatoes, for example, are something that I used to buy every week from the grocery store. Prices range depending on the time of year and availability of them, but now that I grow them, that is one less item that I have to purchase from the store. Plus, I have an abundance of them too and don't have to ever worry about running out of them.
Those are just three things that you can do to reduce your monthly grocery expenses. They are, from my experience, the most effective way to keep a check on your wallet at the grocery store. By becoming a smart grocery shopper, you'll have extra money for other bills or leisure activities.
