How to Reduce Shadowing Around the Nose

Monica Bullock
Signs of aging, like shadowing around the nose, can appear when the skin loses elasticity and plumpness. You may think there is no way to counteract this condition short of plastic surgery, but you're wrong. With the proper makeup application, you can make the area around your nose seem instantly lifted, younger-looking. Pricey makeups aren't necessary; you can probably achieve lifting this area with cosmetics you already have.

Prep the Skin

Start with a good, clean canvas. Use a cleanser that will tone too. Toning will tighten the skin some and help you get that lifted look. Apply a moisturizer that contains a humectant. Humectants attract and capture moisture under the skin. Look for ingredients like retinols or vitamins C and E.

Conceal It

All concealers are not alike and it is important that you use a concealer that will lighten, not darken the area. We fighting shadowing, not adding to it. Here's a tip, if shadowing around the nose is red, use a yellow concealer to offset blotchiness. Everyone else should use a concealer shade that is one or two shades lighter than your foundation.

Concealer Application

There is some disagreement about where the concealer goes on in the layering process, before or after the foundation. The best way to solve this problem is to do both. Here's how to do it.

1. Tap the area with concealer than dab the concealer into the skin. Don't worry about blending.

2. Allow the concealer to dry for 30 seconds before continuing. Apply your foundation. If you haven't tried it yet, we recommend using a mineral powder foundation with a kabuki brush. With this makeup you will get perfectly smooth skin every time.

3. Sweep the highlighter brush in the highlighter powder. Tap it across your wrist to knock off the excess powder.

4. Brush vertical creases along the side of the nose with the highlighter. Go light at first and add more as needed.

Finishing Beauty

Many women today don't bother finishing their makeup with powder but to hide nose creases, you should. A light translucent powder will make the skin look soft, pretty, lighter! Buy yourself a treat-a fluffy powder brush! Powder your face starting at the forehead and working down.

Great tips, Mimi! So many people try to blend concealer, and you're right—let it dry first! :) Very helpful.
