How to Reduce Water Consumption

Christina Armani
There are lots ways to reduce your water consumption. Many won't even cost you anything, and will reduce your monthly water bill. They will help save the environment and benefit plants and grass. We all need to do our part to take care of our planet and its resources. I hope that you use many of these suggestions that I have listed. I know I do!

Turn off the water when you brush your teeth. It's a little thing, but it adds up.

When hanging the water in the fish bowl pour it on a plant or grass.

Install a low-flow shower head, some reduce water by 50%. Turn off the water when shampooing.

Install a reducer on faucets. This will mean that you reduce the amount of water you use.

Use low capacity flush toilets. You can also place a weighted 2 liter bottle in your tank.

Water lawns in the morning: less evaporation, prettier grass, and lower water bill.

Make sure your sprinkler hits only the grass and plants. If it's windy, it'll get everywhere.

When washing your car, use a bucket. You'll only use only the amount of water you need.

When doing the dishes rinse them in 1/2 sink full of soapy water then place in dishwasher. Use the water to wash the sink. Run the dishwasher only when it's full.

Don't waste time in the shower. Less than five minutes will save about 1,000 gallons a year.

Turn the thermostat the other way. Air conditioning and heating dehumidifies the air, burns more electricity, and dries out indoor plants.

Use smaller pet bowls. Give your pets smaller amounts of water more times per day.

Use front loading washing machines. Wash only full loads and use the correct water height.

Line dry your clothes. This uses less electricity and won't humidify the air.

Avoid using the garbage disposal. Compost the waste and save the water.

Keep a pitcher in the refrigerator instead of running the water until it's cool.

Don't plant grass on a steep incline. More water washes away than gets to the grass.

Rinse fruits and veggies in a bowl or sink instead of under running water.

Sweep that driveway. This saves about 80 gallons of water.

Mulch those plants, it holds in the moisture - this means less watering.

Cut the grass higher. They'll have more shade shade, better roots, and will need less water.

Mimimize your use of dishes, the fewer times you run the dishwasher, the more money you save.

Don't let that faucet drip. You'll save 140 gallons per week.

Use soaker hoses or trickle
