How to Refill the Toner of a Brother 2040

Tom Servo
The Brother HL 2040 laser printer has a toner cartridge that needs be replaced when it urns out. The LED light on the front of the printer will indicate when the toner is low. When the "Toner" LED light turns on, you know it is time to change the toner. To refill the toner, you have to remove the drum unit and insert a new toner cartridge.

Step 1

Lift open the front cover of the printer and grab the combined drum unit/toner cartridge. The drum unit and cartridge assembly is large plastic component, directly under the front cover, that resembles the platen on a typewriter. Gently lift it up and pull it forward.

Step 2

Press down on the blue lock lever, which is on the front left side of the drum unit, with your thumb and remove the toner cartridge.

Step 3

Remove the new toner cartridge from its package and hold it level with both hands. Slowly rock the cartridge side to side about five or six times to spread the toner evenly around the cartridge.

Step 4

Remove the protective cover. On the bottom of the toner cartridge, look for a plastic protective cover. You need to pull it off before you can insert it in the printer.

Step 5

Slide the new cartridge into the drum unit until it snaps in place. You will know you inserted it properly if the lever lock locks automatically once the cartridge is fully inserted.

Step 6

Slide the blue corona wire cleaner tab, located inside the back of the drum unit, back and forth several times. Doing this will clean the corona wire, which is important for maintaining optimum print quality.

Step 7

Slide the drum unit and toner cartridge back into the printer and close the front cover.
