How to Refinish a Bathroom Ceramic Sink and Counter

You may have seen adds from companies that promise to refinish your bathroom ceramic sink or counter, but did you know you can do it yourself? Although you will need some specialized materials, completing this project without professional help can significantly lower the costs associated with this project. In order to get professional results, however, be prepared to spend some time carefully following the steps: if you don't feel as though you have the time or patience, you may want to contact that professional after all.

This project will require special paints to cover the ceramic, but you will also have to use safety equipment. Eye protection, gloves, and a respirator to protect your lungs are all important. Also, have a plan for disposing of dirty rags and towels once the job is complete: many of these products are flammable.

Step 1: Remove any stains, dirt, or debris from the surface of the sink or counter top. Most should be able to be cleaned away: old caulk and other adhesives may have to be removed with a razor blade.

Step 2: Lightly sand the entire area you want to refinish with 80 grit sandpaper, paying particular attention to any areas that may have any residue left on them.

Step 3: Use steel wool to lightly scratch the area, further roughing up the surface of the sink or counter top. Vacuum the area thoroughly to remove any sanding residue, then wipe down the entire surface with acetone to remove any dust left behind.

TIP: Acetone is very potent, so be sure to keep the area well ventilated and dispose of any acetone soaked rags properly to avoid a fire.

Step 4: Apply painter's tape around the perimeter of the sink or counter to prevent accidentally painting the wrong area. You should also cover any faucets or other obstructions that could be painted. Place a drop cloth on the floor and cabinets to protect larger areas, or use several layers of newspaper.

Step 5: Apply a primer for use on ceramic surfaces with paper towel. Apply it in a circular motion, like you were buffing wax on a car. Let the primer dry for 30-45 minutes before continuing.

Step 6: Mix the ceramic paint. Most paint and primers for ceramic bathroom sinks and counters are sold as a system, so be sure to buy a paint the fits the primer you have applied.

Step 7: Apply the paint with a foam brush, carefully applying paint in one direction to avoid any marks. Apply one light coat, then allow it to dry and apply a second coat. Keep building coats of paint until the ceramic is coated perfectly.

Step 8: Remove the painter's tape you applied immediately, before the paint has had a chance to dry. Clean up any mistakes in painting using acetone. Allow the area to dry completely for 48 hours before using.
