First pick items you need as well as you want. Create a list of these items. Quite a few wedding planning guides will give you general list of items to register for. Feel free to pick and choose what fits your lifestyle. When picking the stores make sure that it is someplace that you shop regularly because some people will give gift cards to those stores instead of presents. Make sure there are some items that your soon to be husband wants as well, this will make the registering process fun for him as well. Home improvement stores have started to add gift registries for couples. If your husband is into power tools this could be just the ticket.
Second be sure to pick items in a range of prices. This ensures that everyone who wants to buy a present can do so even on a limited budget, or that if someone wants to buy you a bunch of little gifts for your shower and your wedding they can do that. The more wedding showers you have the more items you should add to your registry. For those who want something more, you can choose to have registry gifts donated to your favorite charity, or family and friends can give towards your honeymoon.
Third pick two to three stores to register at. You want to make sure that at least one is a chain store. This ensures that those who live out of town can purchase you a gift with relative ease. Another great way to purchase gifts is to see if items can be purchased from your registry online. If they have a registry online ask to be sure that it is reputable and that items will arrive on time.
Fourth, have someone you trust check your registry to see if more items need to be added. This allows you to be surprised at what is given, yet keeps you aware of what is going on.
Lastly, you may receive gift cards from some individuals. Most stores keep your registries for a period of time after the wedding. This will allow you to pick up anything that was not gotten for your wedding using those gift cards.
