When giving healing, you need to be grounded so you don't absorb any negativity or symptoms from your client. Because a Reiki practitioner is a channel for the energy to flow through, it is unusual for this to happen but don't worry if you do feel exhausted or negative after you do a healing session. There are techniques to help you rectify this.
Before Starting Your Reiki Session
As a Reiki practitioner you have a duty to yourself and to others. Your intention is to leave your client with a positive outlook on your Reiki healing service and a feeling that they are getting beneficial treatment.
Common Sense Procedures for Preparing to Give Reiki
Prepare your room before the client arrives. It should be inviting and relaxing. Reiki incense can be used before and during treatment to help warm and harmonise the room. In ancient times the burning of incense was believed to bridge earth to heaven and it was believed to bring man's prayers to heavenly gods. Dim the lights to create a relaxed, peaceful atmosphere.
Before starting your Reiki session, spend time talking to your client; they need to be at ease. If this is your client's first time with you, you will need to explain (or give them written guidelines) about the procedures involved in the treatment.
Remember that as a Reiki practitioner, you must never claim to "cure". You should be supportive, understanding and positive: this will help the client feel at ease. Unless suitably qualified you should never give a medical diagnosis to a client; this is the responsibility of a registered medical practitioner.
Explain that Reiki does not take the place of conventional medical treatment. Ask your client about what medical advice they have received and if appropriate advise those who might need to, to consult their GP.
Ask your client to remove their glasses and footwear if treatment is to be on a couch. You might provide a step for those who have difficulty getting on and off a treatment couch.
Ask your client to lie on their back. Offer to place a pillow support under their head or knees. Be sure your client is comfortable. If it is cold a light blanket should cover everything except the client's neck and head. Once your client is comfortable, you are ready to begin your Reiki Healing.
