To find a reliable plumber or home repairman, give them something to lose.
To find a reliable plumber, first get references from friends. The plumber will appreciate the work, and the more you allow him into your network, the more he feels he owes you. That is, if he loses one friend's business, he might lose the whole neighborhood. Make a plumber reliable by giving him business, not a hard time.
If banding together and playing nice doesn't find you a reliable plumber, start your online search. A new website, Bizbid.net, offers a great system for finding professionals. The reason I'm writing this article is because I found a plumber on that site, and he's still my plumber to this day. You could also try findaplumber.com.
Once you find your plumber online, give him your business card, and if he does a great job, give him the business cards of your friends as well. If you can't get a good referral from step 1, become the referral. Again, this will make the plumber reliable because he'll have more to lose. In the end, you catch more flies with money than you do with vinegar. Good luck!
