How to Relieve an Infant's Pain Caused by Teething

Shay Mabry
A teething infant is a miserable infant. Their gums are sore and swollen causing the child to cry out in pain. This can lead to long days and late nights. These tips can give your child some relief from their teething pain and give you some rest.

Infant's Ibuprofen (Motrin)

Ibuprofen will reduce the swelling of the child's gums. The swelling caused by the tooth (or teeth) that is trying to break the gum and produces painful pressure. You can give your chil ibuprofen every 4 - 6 hours, if needed.

All-Natural Teething Tablets

These homeopathic tablets are 100% natural, have no side-effects, and dissolve completely and almost instantly. The tablets will reduce the symptoms of restlessness and irritability caused from teething. The brand of teething tablets that I recommend are made by Hyland's. You can find them at most major store chains.

Make a Creative Teething Toy

Once a child gets a little older their teething toy is the last thing they seem to want to put in their mouth. They would rather put a random object they find lying on the house floor. I found that cold objects keep them interested and reduces the swelling of the gums. Try a frozen crinkle french fry. The child likes it because it is food but the fry thaws very slowly giving them pain relief.

Pure Vanilla Extract

Apply a small amount of the extract onto your finger and rub onto the child's gum. This helps in a few ways. The extract causes a warming effect caused by the natural alcohol which is comforting. Also, vanilla is known to reduce anxiety. Also, if the infant is swallowing large amounts of drool it can soothe the stomach.
