Some even warn that you should contact your doctor should you find yourself doing things like driving, eating, walking or engaging in other activities while asleep! Yikes!
Oh my, not Opium!
In the early 16th century they experimented and used an alcoholic tincture of opium called Laudanum. According to Wikipedia in the 16th century a man by the name of Phillip Von Hohenheim (who later changed his name to Paracelsus, meaning equal or greater than Celcus) an alchemist, physician, astrologer and general occultist named this tincture Laudanum after the Latin word "laudare meaning "to praise." He did this because the medicinal and analgesic (or pain killing effect) effects of Laudanum were very strong. He had no idea at the time that it was extremely addictive. Some side effects are actually worse for your body than others causing an increase in health issues you will need to address.

The benefits of getting your rest are crucial to your over all well being and the risks of the lack of sleep can even be deadly! In fact, according to an article on About.com:

They also develop sores, their immune systems do not work well and their body temperature drops. Humans deprived of sleep for long periods begin hallucinating and develop other mental problems".
